Last meeting of the semester and other happenings

May 6, 2010 1 comment

Hey hams!

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve last posted something, but things have been busy with the end of the semester creeping up. Last week we talked about a few important things that everyone should be aware about:

-The last meeting of the semester will be held on the last day of classes, May 13th, at 7PM in Surge Facility 1.

-We will meet over the summer on Thursdays at 7PM beginning on June 3rd. We may change the day/time once people figure out their summer schedules.

-Field Day 2010 is June 26-27th. Tom and I will be out of town that weekend, but if anyone in the club is interested in participating, we can set up times for the shack to be open. If there is not enough interest, then we will not participate.

-We decided on a QSL design that we will send out. I will try to get the design posted soon. We are in the process of getting them printed, and will be able to respond to the multitude of QSL cards that we received from the School Club Roundup.

That’s all for now. Don’t forget that we have a meeting tonight at 7PM! See you all then!

Back from Winter Break

Hey everyone! We’re back from Winter break and ready to get back into the swing of things! Tom and I have been busy lately, but we’re working on some exciting things for the club for the Spring Semester. Here’s a preview of some upcoming events. If you want to help us plan events, send an email to Tom or Josh. Coming up this semester:

Feb. 1 – First Meeting of the Semester

Feb. 3 – Involvment Fest on Maintstreet in the Commons from 11-2pm. We need people to help man our table and talk to interested students.

Feb. 8-12 – ARRL School Club Roundup. We will be doing something similar to last semester with pizza, etc.

March – possible inter-club event. Details still pending.

If you have any suggestions for activities, leave a comment below. The UMBC ARC is always looking for ways to get involved with other groups and organizations, so drop us a line if you have ideas!

Weekly Meeting – Dec. 3

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

Hello Everyone!

This past week we had our second to last meeting for the semester. Here are a few topics we discussed at the meeting:

  • Our last meeting for the Fall semester will be next week, Dec. 10th. We will resume meetings after winter break, probably a the same date and time (Thurs @ 7pm). If anything changes, we’ll send an email to the list-proc.
  • This weekend there is a special event at the Historical Electronics Museum. Details were not available at the meeting, but both Tom and I may attend this event to represent the club. I’ll post a story on our blog if we go.
  • Our new website is up! Please check it out and send any comments to the webmaster.
  • We re-registered the club for the Spring Semester and secured a spot at Involvement Fest Spring 2009. Hopefully we can recruit more members next semester.
  • There was also talk of holding a “radio demo” outside of the Commons to drum up interest in the club. This is something that will require a lot of planning, but is an easy way to get the UMBC Radio Club’s name out there. More info will be forthcoming about this event.

That’s all for now. Keep reading the blog over the next few weeks. We’ll try to post articles of interest and keep you informed of any ideas that we come up with for events next semester. Enjoy the holidays and good luck on finals!

Weekly Meeting 10/29/09

October 30, 2009 Leave a comment

Last evening marked our first weekly meeting after the School Club Roundup contest. We did pretty well in the contest, considering that it was our first time. Everyone got a chance to get on the air. We made all of our contacts using PSK-31 since our other Kenwood HF radio wasn’t cooperating with us. Our President is compiling a list of our contacts and it should be posted on our website shortly. You can visit here to see our results from last week.

In other news, we were able to get the Kenwood HF radio working last night! Thanks to Carlos’ magic touch, the Kenwood is now in working order. Carlos made a contact in Nevada last night on PSK-31 and we heard plenty of people on voice. Now that we’ve got two working HF radios, it’s time for us to enter another contest. Coming up at the end of the month is the ARRL November Sweepstakes contest. If there is enough interest in the club, we will be participating. Once details are finalized, we’ll post info on our homepage.

That’s all for now. Check back next week for another update!
